How to Learn Surah Ar-Rahman by Heart: A Plan to Memorize It in 3 Weeks

Surah Ar-Rahman ("The Most Merciful") is one of the most beautiful surahs to listen to, and one of the most requested when you want to learn a medium-length surah. It has 78 verses and one special feature: a refrain repeated 31 times. It is what makes the surah pleasant to hear, and also what can make it hard to memorize, because the refrain blurs your memory of the order of the verses.

Ar-Rahman at a glance

  • Number: 55th surah of the Quran
  • Verses: 78
  • Revelation: opinions differ between Meccan and Medinan
  • Special feature: the refrain "Fa-bi-ayyi ālā'i rabbikumā tukadhdhibān" ("Then which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?"), repeated 31 times
  • Themes: the blessings of Allah, creation, the Day of Judgment, the description of Paradise

How to handle the refrain when learning the surah

The refrain trap is reciting without knowing where you are: you finish a group of verses, say the refrain, and no longer know which group comes next. Here is how to avoid it:

  1. Learn the groups of verses first, without the refrain, then add it.
  2. Note the first word of each group (the one right after the refrain): that word tells you where you are.
  3. Count the refrains: each passage gets a number, which helps you not skip or add any.
  4. Listen on repeat to a reciter you trust: the repetitive rhythm imprints well on the ear.

The plan: 78 verses in 3 weeks

At about 4 verses a day (15 to 25 minutes), here is a guideline split:

WeekVersesWhat to do each day
11 to 28Learn ~4 verses, review the previous day's
229 to 56Same, and recite 1 to 28 at the end of the week
357 to 78Same, then a full recitation of 1 to 78

If your schedule is busy, drop to 2 or 3 verses a day: it will take 4 weeks, and that's just as good.

Other tips

  • Understand the meaning: the surah follows a thread (blessings, then judgment, then Paradise) that helps you remember the order.
  • Recite out loud each day the part you already know before learning the next.
  • Review the longest passages more often, because they are the ones that fade fastest.

How not to forget Ar-Rahman afterwards

A surah with a refrain is easily lost without review: memory keeps the rhythm but forgets the details. You need to come back to the text at progressive intervals: the next day, then a few days later, then one or two weeks later, then a month later (as a rough guide).
