Which Surah Should You Start Memorizing the Quran With?
Two serious approaches to choosing a starting point that's motivating, realistic, and suited to your level.
It's often the very first question people ask themselves before even opening an app or a Mushaf: where do I start? Should I follow the order of the Quran starting from Al-Fatiha? Jump straight into the long surahs? There are actually two main approaches, each with its own logic. Here's how to choose the one that fits you.
1. Why the order of memorization isn't trivial
The Quran is arranged in the Mushaf from the longest surahs to the shortest (with a few exceptions), not in chronological order of revelation or in an order designed for learning. Starting from the first page in reading order (Al-Baqara, the longest surah in the Quran) is therefore rarely the recommended starting point for a beginner: discouragement quickly looms when facing surahs with hundreds of verses.
That's why two strategies have become established over time, each with its own advantages.
2. Method 1: start from Juz 'Amma and work backwards (the traditional method)
This is the approach taught in most Quranic schools and traditional Hifz programs. The principle: start with Juz 'Amma (the 30th and last Juz of the Quran, made up of the shortest surahs, usually located at the very end of the Mushaf), then progressively work backwards toward the beginning of the Quran, Juz 29, then 28, and so on up to Al-Baqara.
Why this method works well for beginners
- The surahs in Juz 'Amma are short (some are only 3 to 8 verses), which allows for quick, motivating wins
- They're also the surahs most recited in daily prayers: memorizing them first therefore has immediate practical use
- Progressing through increasing difficulty gives time to build good review habits before tackling the long surahs
- It's the method used for generations in classic Quranic teaching, with a proven framework
This is the approach QuranMemorize offers by default during onboarding: a structured path that starts at Juz 'Amma and progressively works backwards, surah after surah, up to Al-Baqara.

3. Method 2: freely choose your starting surah
The other approach starts from a different principle: personal motivation matters more than theoretical order. Some learners prefer to start with a surah that has a special resonance for them: the one recited at their wedding, the one they hear most often at the mosque, or simply the one they've always wanted to understand deeply.
Why this method may suit certain profiles better
- A surah chosen out of personal attachment is often more motivating to memorize than one imposed by an external order
- For someone who already has a foundation (for example, who already knows all of Juz 'Amma), starting over from the beginning doesn't make sense
- This freedom lets you tailor the journey to a specific goal (preparing for an occasion, going deeper into a surah studied in a tafsir class, etc.)
To meet this need, QuranMemorize also offers, right from onboarding, the option to freely choose your surah or starting point rather than following the structured Juz 'Amma to Baqara path.
4. How to choose between the two?
| Your situation | Recommended method |
|---|---|
| You're completely new to Hifz | Juz 'Amma → backwards (traditional method) |
| You want a proven framework, without overthinking the order | Juz 'Amma → backwards |
| You've already memorized some surahs | Free choice, to continue where you left off |
| A specific surah has particular meaning for you | Free choice |
| You're preparing for a specific occasion (wedding, leading prayer, etc.) | Free choice, targeted at that surah |
There's no wrong choice between the two: what matters is starting with a method that makes you want to keep going. In fact, nothing stops you from starting with the traditional method and then switching to a freer choice once the basics are in place, or vice versa.
5. In summary
Whether you follow the classic Juz 'Amma to Al-Baqara path or choose your own starting point, what matters is consistency over time, not the order itself. QuranMemorize offers both approaches right from account creation, so everyone starts with the method that suits them best, without having to figure it out alone.
